Game room cable management in one afternoon

The cables behind a game setup multiply when nobody’s looking. One afternoon, a few clips and a plan, and the floor is back.

Before you start

Unplug everything and take a photo of what goes where. It saves a lot of guessing when you plug things back in.

What you’ll need

  • Velcro ties (they can be undone, unlike zip ties)
  • Adhesive cable clips
  • A cable tray or a box for the power strip
  • Labels or tape and a pen

Step by step

  1. Group cables by where they go. Everything to the TV in one bundle, everything to the desk in another.
  2. Mount the power strip off the floor. Under the desk or behind the TV stand. Dust and feet stay away from it.
  3. Run bundles along edges. Desk legs, the back of the stand, skirting boards. The eye ignores lines that follow edges.
  4. Label both ends. When something stops working, you’ll know which plug to check.

Cheat code

Leave a little slack at each device. Tight cables pull on ports and fall out of clips the first time you move something.
